What Is Liya?
Liya Linux, or Liya GNU/Linux, is yet another Arch Linux-based distribution designed with a focus on user experience and performance. Lightweight and easy to use, it maintains 100% compatibility with Arch Linux without any performance disparities.
Why Was Liya Started?
Liya was born out of frustration with bloated distributions. The creator, after finding an Arch-based distribution too heavy for his 4GB RAM computer, sought a balance between performance and features. Thus, Liya emphasizes:
- No Bloat: The ISO contains only necessary and basic software.
- Great Performance: Liya performs well, as shown by benchmarks.
- Lightweight and Complete: An average Liya system with 4GB RAM and a dual-core CPU consumes about 600-800 MB when idle.
- Clean UI: Offers a clean, minimally customized interface without sacrificing performance.
Liya Is For Users Who:
- Are unhappy with their current OS.
- Have a 64-bit (x86_64) processor.
- Want an easy-to-install, out-of-the-box Arch-based Cinnamon desktop setup.
- Prefer an easy-to-use rolling-release OS.
- Value performance over aesthetics.
- Seek a high-performance OS that maximizes hardware efficiency.
Liya Is Not For Users Who:
- Dislike SYSTEMD.
- Don’t want a rolling-release OS.
- Avoid using the command line.
- Have a 32-bit processor.
- Dislike the distribution.
- Are distro-hoppers.
Initial Steps
After installation, it’s recommended (but not necessary) to update the system. Use the command line for the best results:
- Fix Pacman Repo
fixpacrepo
- Refresh the mirror list:
sudo mv /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.bak && sudo reflector --latest 10 --sort rate --save /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
- Refresh the keyring:
sudo pacman -Sy archlinux-keyring chaotic-keyring
- Update the system:
sudo pacman -Syu
After updating, restart the system.
Troubleshooting:
If an update breaks the system: Restore from automatic snapshots (if installed on BTRFS filesystem). Select the snapshot during boot and restore it.
For feature requests or device issues: Open a forum post or Gitlab issue. The live environment allows you to test device compatibility before installation.
Installing Apps:
To install applications, you have two choices:
- Official Repositories
- AUR
Example: To install TeamViewer:
- Open Add/Remove Software.
- Search for TeamViewer.
- Choose the package from "Repositories" or, if unavailable, from "AUR" (with caution).
- Click apply, enter your password, and wait for installation.
Additional Information:
- Origin: Liya is developed in India by a single developer, Sayed M. Hisham, with plans to expand the team.
